This billboard is advertising several daylong music extravaganzas at the restaurant and dancehall La Terraza del Marquez. Admission is either free or no more than a reasonable $4US donation. Food in the form of botanas (snacks or small dishes like tapas) are available.
Ecobici stations can be found all over the city. For those with a membership, it's a very simple system. Borrow a bike a one location; return it to any other Ecobici rack. To further help fight the tremendous air pollution problem Mexico City faces, on Sundays, many downtown streets are closed to traffic and only permit bicycle or pedestrian usage. Increased, efficient public transportation like the more rapid Metrobus further promotes a greener DF.
In my blog on my visit to the University of Mexico, I shared with you a segment of the Siqueiros mural. It's so impressive that I thought I give you the "Full Monte" this week. Students playing soccer in its shadow probably have little idea as to its stature in the world of art. Siqueiros is one of the greatest of the Mexican muralists along with Rivera and Orozco. This mural Ascent of Culture was constructed in the early to mid-1950s. As was true for the other muralists as well, Siqueiros' work represents issues of concern to the common people.
One of my favorite things about traveling is simply strolling the streets and neighborhoods of a city without any particular destination in mind. While walking through San Angel, just a few steps away from Plaza San Jacinto, I came upon the Iglesia de San Jacinto. Thus small baroque church dates from the 16th century. Surrounded by peaceful gardens, it is the perfect setting for a few minutes of reflection or, as I found it, a popular location for Saturday weddings. Thus is also one of the few remaining neighborhoods in DF with cobblestone paved streets. No wonder Diego and Frida chose this area as home!
Standards vary from culture to culture. On Lopez Street, shops prepare and sell chicken to area residents and restaurants. What is prepared today is usually sold today as well. Refrigeration and poultry inspection are not common practices in Mexico. In spite of this, problems with contamination aren't generally an issue. Whether in shops like these or in one of the many markets, locals don't blink an eye when it comes to buying meat and poultry for their household tables. Chicken enchiladas anyone? ¡Buen provecho!
