Murphy's Law

Travel days don't always turn out to be perfect! For the second time, the same thing happened at exactly this time last year, I traveled out to Texcoco (a 16 mile ride by second class bus) to visit the Rivera murals at Chapingo University. Last year the museum on campus was closed due to a worker's strike. When I arrived at the entrance this morning, guess what? The workers and teachers were on strike again. According to the guard at the gate that I spoke with, the strike was now a month old and might last into April. No students, no classes, no murals! Oh well, as disappointed as I am, I'm heading back into Mexico City earlier than planned and will be able to take in a couple markets this afternoon. Days like this are all part of the travel experience. I do plan on having some good mole for lunch at one if my favorite fondas.

At the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Today's travel took me across town to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The Antigua Basilica Built Around 1700

In all my travels to Mexico City, I had never visited this place so important to Mexican Catholics. Although it is just a short subway ride fom the Zocalo, it's not prominently mentioned in tour guides. It is a mix of old and new combined with beautiful gardens and sculptures that well deserves a visit.

It is a peaceful place to wander about or just sit and reflect upon one's travels. For centuries, the basilica has been an important pilgrimage site. Pope John Paul II visited here in 2002.

One of Many Beautiful Images of the Virgin

The presence of the Virgin is pervasive throughout the basilica complex.

I was lucky enough to hear the choir in the new basilica today. Wonderful acoustics made the place seem like it was filled with angles.
